“Toyota” The company was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda as a spinoff from his father's company. Vehicles were originally sold under the name "Toyoda" from the family name and in April 1936, Toyoda's first passenger car, the Model AA, was completed. Since "Toyoda" literally means "fertile rice paddies" (associated with old-fashioned farming) and the pronunciation was kind of “muddy” , the name was changed to Toyota In 1937. Toyota entered the US market in 1957 with the Crown. By the early 1960s, the US had begun placing stiff import tariffs on certain vehicles. In response to the tariff, Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. began building plants in the US by the early 1980s. Toyota has been involved in many global motorsports series. Toyota's major motorsports development including Formula One, the World Rally Championship, the Le Mans Series and most recently the FIA World Endurance Championship. Toyota enjoyed success in all these motorsports categories, as it became a Legend.
