Caution Drag Race - Aluminum Sign

Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which automobiles or motorcycles compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance, most commonly 1⁄4 mi (402 m). The history of automobiles and motorcycles being used for drag racing is nearly as long as the history of motorized vehicles themselves, and has taken the form of both illegal street racing, and as an organized and regulated motorsport. The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) was founded in 1951, to take illegal racing off the street. It sets rules in drag racing and mandates numerous safety devices and procedures in all competition events. There are more than a dozen Sportsman Classes, including Super Street, Super Gas, Stock Eliminator, Super Stock, Competition Eliminator, Super Comp, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, and Top Alcohol Dragster. NHRA promotes mainly the Professional classes at national Events, however, the majority of its participants are Sportsman Racers. Sportsman-class racers must be dues-paying members of NHRA before they are allowed to enter and participate in any NHRA event. With over 40,000 drivers in its rosters, the NHRA claims to be the largest motorsports sanctioning body in the world.
